WARNING iPhone Users:

31 July, 2009

virus

That seems to be the only practical advice we’ve heard so far as a security vulnerability is set to be exposed later this afternoon that potentially threatens every iPhone via an SMS message. Apple is yet to release a patch, and although leading security software vendors like Symantec and McAfee are both working on iPhone and Apple-related virus protection, nothing is yet available to protect you from the supposed SMS vulnerability. How do you know if you’ve been infected? Reportedly, you’ll receive an SMS message with a single square character, at which point your phone will become inoperable. As we mentioned earlier, the exploit is supposedly so severe that your entire phone can be taken over remotely, as such, the “turn your phone off immediately” if you receive the message seems to be the only sound advice at this point.

* 1. The major issue is a security flaw involving SMS. Specifically, the hack can control an iPhone remotely, including your iPhone’s camera, Safari, and more. It can even send messages to friends in your address book, which is where this hack becomes scariest.

* 2. The hack works by sending you code in an SMS message (or a series of messages) that crashes your iPhone. After that, your iPhone is theirs to use.

* 3. The offending text would come in the form of a single square character. If you get the square character, turn off your phone IMMEDIATELY.

* 4. You only have to receive the message to get hacked; you don’t even have to do anything with the text message.

* 5. The flaw was discovered by noted security expert Charlie Miller, who has hacked everything from MacBook Airs to Second Life, and partner Collin Mullinger.

* 6. The attack was presented publicly at the Black Hat conference. The duo decided to do this after Apple gave them no response back in July, when they provided Apple with information on the security flaw. The goal is to bring attention to the flaw (which they are clearly getting).

* 7. According to Reuters, now that the vulnerability is exposed, hackers could build software that mounts this SMS attack within the next two weeks.

* 8. Apparently Google Android, Windows Mobile phones, and Palm Pres are vulnerable to similar hacks. The team demonstrated the attack on an Android phone and a Windows Mobile phone.

So net/net about $30 million in new value was created yesterday by the market, All of that plus everything Yahoo lost went to Microsoft. Yahoo got Binged, to the tune of $2.9 Billion. Oops.

Overview Of Microsoft Yahoo Deal: DEAL OVERVIEW

Microsoft + Yahoo Reach Deal On Search.

29 July, 2009

MICROhoo

Who got a better deal? I think its 50/50 because Yahoo does not get cash and Microsoft does not take over. Today they struck a deal for a 10-year Internet-search partnership, ending a protracted dance and uniting the rivals against Google Inc.

Under the deal, Yahoo will make Microsoft’s Bing search engine the search provider on its Web sites, licensing its own search technology to Microsoft to integrate if it chooses. Yahoo will handle sales of search ads for both companies, using Microsoft’s search-advertising technology.

There is no large upfront payment from Microsoft. Instead, the agreement is a revenue-sharing pact, with Microsoft paying Yahoo 88% of the search revenue generated from its sites during the first five years of the agreement. Read more at Wall Street Journal.

Netgear routers and OpenDNS to block porn and violence from the internet

Netgear is about to ship routers designed to simplify the process of blocking certain types of websites such as pornography, hate sites, or sites that promote alcohol or drug use, by allowing parents to block the content ON ANY DEVICE USING THE HOME NETWORK.

Before employing any parental control system, I urge parents to think about how they will or won’t fit in with your family. Consider the age of the child, the child’s Web surfing habits, the types of risk your child takes, and what you plan to say to your children about the filtering product. Parents should tell their kids that they’re using filters and explain why they think they’re necessary. Also, parents should never rely on filters as the only way to protect children–parental involvement is still important. If you decide to use a filter, consider weaning kids from them as they enter their teenage years. Eventually, your kids will be on their own and part of a parent’s job is to help a child make their own good decisions. You can’t rely on filters forever. Read More On Cnet.com

Ten ways hackers can breach your system and how you can fight back

You may have all of your software patched, and you may have anti-virus software protecting your PCs, but is that enough? No single approach will save your network from being hacked, but the more measures you take, the harder you will make it for attackers to infiltrate your systems — and the more likely they are to move on to the next potential victim. In the modern security landscape, the people less likely to be hit are those that present the hardest target for an attacker.

PC World Canada describes 10 of the greatest threats to your system and how you can respond here.

1. Operating system flaws

2. SQL injection

3. Drive-by downloads

4. Password compromise

5. Social engineering

6. Malicious email

7. Physical access

8. Network compromise

9. Wireless hacking

10. Find the weak point

My brand new portfolio website has just gone live in the last few minutes.

For those who are interested, I used a range of software to help me accomplish this task including most of Adobe CS4 Master Suite. I built it as a Flash website originally then converted to XHTML 1.0 Strict, especially to accommodate connections with lower speeds. I will run the flash site when I get a cheap and cheerful hosting service.

It is still in a beta stage and any feedback is welcome via comments here or via email to pwam@live.com

The site will keep growing whenever I get time from my family man duties!

24 July, 2009

All Digital Rights Management – DRM has ever done is annoy consumers who actually paid for their music. No single piece of DRM has ever stopped anyone from pirating music, it’s quite the opposite as the music industry now realizes.
